The new High Relief 1oz Southern Cross Silver Coin draws inspiration from the powerful symbols of Oceania.
When it comes to the stars that rule our skies, there is no constellation more recognisable—or that captures our national identity better—than the Southern Cross.
Comprising just four stars, the small-but-mighty constellation has for centuries been used as a navigational tool. With deep cultural significance throughout the region, it proudly features on the flags of Australia, New Zealand and many Pacific Island nations.
So when ABC Mint set out to design a signature bullion coin dedicated to Oceania, it was only fitting to feature the Southern Cross with iconic Australian animals including the Kangaroo and Emu.
Utilising a stunning ‘high relief’ feature in its intricate design, the coin also features the iconic Kangaroo and Emu against the vast Australian outback, heads titled in unison toward the Southern Cross in the night sky.
This high relief feature, achieved using world-class production techniques, sees the intricate design elegantly raised up to 1.5 mm above the surface.
Those techniques involve using compressed fine powder to achieve the desired finish, which results in virtually no waste metal generated during the process.
The silver powder technique is considered far more efficient and environmentally friendly than conventional coin production—which typically sees metal cut from a sheet or plate, meaning the surrounding material then requires reprocessing.
The Southern Cross Coin Collection has been made from Australian-mined 99.99% gold and 99.99% silver, these precious metals are responsibly and ethically sourced by ABC Refinery, the only independent Australian refinery accredited by the LBMA, SGE and CME.
